Marion Island

Deep in the sub-Antarctic Ocean is a tiny volcanic island called Marion. It takes five gruelling days of braving the notorious Roaring Forties to get there.

Marion Island lies at 46°52′34″ South 37°51′32″ East . It’s an island of incredible diversity and contrast. The lowlands are rich in plant, animal and bird life, but above 750 metres it’s a barren lifeless landscape. Eighty percent of Marion Island is polar desert.

Sunshine is rare. There is little vegetation and the island has no trees due to persistently strong winds throughout the year. You can find out much more about Marion Island by visiting the links section.

Petrus ZS8T will be based on the east side of the island at the newly constructed Marion Island base (KMZ for Google-Earth).
